Albania in Depth: A Journey from the Northern Mountains to the Southern Coast

Spread the love

There are many ways to travel through Albania. Most move quickly, connecting one place to another, collecting impressions along the way. This journey is designed differently.

Over eight days, we travel from the northern Alps to the southern coastline, taking the time to understand the rhythm of each place rather than simply passing through it. The distances are not great, but the shifts in landscape, culture, and atmosphere are striking. What matters is how you move between them.

This is a thoughtfully paced itinerary, shaped for travelers who prefer depth over speed, and a sense of connection over a checklist of sights.

Day 1 – Tirana
Arrival in Albania’s capital. Depending on your time of arrival, we begin with a gentle introduction to the city. Tirana is not a city that reveals itself all at once. It is layered, informal, and best understood through small details, changing architecture, and everyday life. The evening is left open, with the possibility of a well-chosen dinner to mark the beginning of the journey.

Day 2 – Towards the north, Shkodër
We leave Tirana and travel north towards Shkodër, one of the country’s most historically significant cities. Along the way, we may pause for a slow lunch in a rural setting, offering a first glimpse into the agricultural life of the region. Shkodër itself has a different feel from the capital, quieter, more reflective, with a long history tied to trade, religion, and culture.

Day 3 – Into the Albanian Alps, Theth
The road turns towards the mountains as we make our way into the Albanian Alps. The journey itself is part of the experience, with changing landscapes that gradually become more dramatic. Arrival in Theth brings a sense of removal from the rest of the country. The afternoon is left light, perhaps a short walk, time to settle, and an evening in a family-run guesthouse.

Day 4 – Theth at your own pace
A full day in the mountains. There are several possible walks, from gentle explorations of the valley to more active hikes. We do not impose a fixed program here. Some prefer to walk further, others to slow down and take in the surroundings. The value of Theth lies as much in its stillness as in its scenery.

Day 5 – South towards Berat
We leave the north and begin the journey south. This is one of the longer drives, but it is broken carefully to avoid fatigue. By late afternoon, we arrive in Berat, a UNESCO-listed town known for its distinctive architecture and layered history. The evening light over the old quarters gives the city a quiet presence.

Day 6 – Berat and its surroundings
A slower day. Time to explore the old town, walk through its narrow streets, and understand its character beyond the surface. We often include a visit to a local winery or countryside setting, offering a different perspective on the region. This is a day to breathe a little.

Day 7 – The southern coast
We continue towards the Albanian Riviera. The road climbs through the Llogara Pass before descending towards the sea, one of the most striking transitions in the country. The afternoon is left open, whether for a swim, a walk, or simply time by the water.

Day 8 – Departure or continuation
Depending on your plans, we arrange your return or continue the journey further south or into neighboring regions.

This journey includes private transport, carefully selected accommodation, and the presence of a knowledgeable driver or guide who understands not only the logistics, but also the places themselves. At certain sites, we may include local specialists whose perspective adds depth where it matters.

This itinerary is not fixed in a rigid sense. It can be adapted, extended, or reshaped depending on your interests, timing, and travel style.

Albania does not need to be rushed. Given a little time and the right structure, it reveals itself in ways that are difficult to anticipate. This journey is designed to allow exactly that.

Pricing and Experience

This journey is designed for small groups or private travel to ensure a relaxed and meaningful experience. Pricing typically starts around €1,350 per person based on two travelers sharing accommodation. The final cost depends on your preferences for accommodation, level of customization, and travel dates.

Every element of the trip—from the pace of travel to the choice of lodging and local experiences—is tailored to you. We encourage you to reach out so we can discuss your priorities and provide a clear proposal for your ideal journey through Albania.
