This tour is extremely unique and is designed for those with an interest in the bizarre sides of history. We started running this tour in 2015 for travelers, artists and journalists alike and it was a huge success! We are not exaggerating when we say that we’re quite knowledgeable and good at doing this – it is something our company is specifically known for!
The 700,000 (or probably considerably less but still quite a lot) bunkers of Albania, while arguably an eyesore, add character to the landscape and tell us about the mysterious nature of communist rule under Enver Hoxha.  This flexible day tour offers a chance to explore these concrete curiosities and enjoy some time exploring other parts of Albanian heritage.  Of course, we’ll impart historical information, too! Some of these bunkers were HUGE fall-out shelters intended to house members of the communist party.  Here is a fantastic article written on them (but we will impart many more personal stories, too!)
Let us know which day you are coming and we can work out the details from there. We will indulge in meetings with local people to hear about their lifestyles through personal stories, visit impressive bunkers of all sizes, enjoy plenty of gorgeous landscapes and see some interesting communist street art. In the warm season we can certainly end this tour with a refreshing swim in the shallow waters of Albanian Adriatic. During the cooler season, or if you’re not interested in swimming, we’ll bring you to eat instead! Durres has a fine offering of restaurants, including many seafood ones!

Itinerary Options (Flexible According to Your Interests)
  • In the morning, we’ll drive west from Tirana towards Durres to explore the countryside and meet with local people, visit impressive bunkers of all sizes, see plenty of landscapes and check out communist street art!
  • There is an option to see one or both of the famous BunkArt galleries (1 &2) in Tirana, which recently reopened its doors to the public after a period of silence.
  • We can end the day in Durres (which has more bunkers but also a beautiful pine forest, sandy beaches and plenty of tasty Albanian beer and food.)
  • If the season is right, we can visit derelict Sazan Island, full of ex-military buildings and bunkers (and Albania’s only island!)
  • If interested, we can add a visit to the Roman Amphitheater of Durres and some of the city center attractions too! We can add a trip to Apollonia or include some bird-watching in the Karavasta Lagoon. The day is yours!

Slogane-ne-vitet-60

This is a highlight of Albania and a rather convenient tour since it’s located right in central Albania near Tirana, the airport and the harbour. While a highlight of any visitor to the Land of the Eagles, it can be a great day for those who visit Albania from a cruise-ship, too but we will do our best so that you are away from the crowds and experience this just as locals do. Click here to find out more about it!

We’re organizing six-day group tours to see Albania’s famous lagoons. This tour is mainly focused on bird-watching and nature! It is definitely designed for those with a love of the outdoors but we will indeed visit other points of interest that don’t have to do with birds or fauna. The group will have a maximum of 12 participants and we’ll only run it if we will manage to get a minimum of 4 participants.

Please keep in mind that the itinerary will be flexible in order to allow for the best viewings but we do generally know where we’ll be staying each night (see below.)  From there we can make the best plans for you according to conditions and interests. Our local ornithology specialists will lead us through the best areas and we’ll make sure it’s in the peak of the newborn season when activity among the resident bird communities is at its highest!

We are consistently amazed by all the new things learned and by the enthusiasm of our amazing friends from Karavasta, one of the most famous parks in Albania. Albanian Trip and PPNEA are trying to promote and preserve Divjaka as well as trying to help local communities get stronger.  Quite close to Tirana and central Albania, this is a great place to visit – it’s the Kingdom of the Curly Pelican of Albania!

Please keep in mind that we also have a Day Trip we offer of bird watching.

An extension to the tour can be definitely discussed for groups or individual tours and we can add the historical, artistic and culinary sides of Albania and the region, too!

Calling all plant lovers! After partnering with the Geneva Botanical Association (and recently with the Association Botanique de France) and having offered wonderful tours of Albania, Northern Macedonia and Kosovo, we’re more than excited to launch our very own Botanical Tour of Albania. This tour is designed to be flexible. We would be happy to discuss with you how many days you have to set aside – whether just a few days or an entire week – and we will come up with the best plan of action while following advice from some of the most informed specialists of Albania and Europe.
Of course, the seasons are important and we will aim to make these journeys when conditions are ideal for following specific flower and plant routes.  We can tell you that the tour will be based mostly in the lush and mountainous northern region of Albania. Here we will explore the rich natural aspects of the region. However, if you have more time to set aside, we can journey to other parts of the country.
Rather than setting an itinerary in stone here, get in touch with us!  Let us know the number of days you have free, when you are coming and from there we can begin to discuss what opportunities there are.
Price:
The price will be discussed based on the duration and number in your group.

The views from our Villa are just stunning

Ok – this is a luxury villa with a pool, stunning views, a fine restaurant next to it, comfortable residence, etc. So far it seems like just another ordinary holiday villa anywhere in the Mediterranean…

But, if you opt to stay here, you will be doing something spectacular for people in need – the owners are donating all sales from renting out this accommodation to help finance the studies of three Albanian students from poor communities of a mountain area! The first year has already been a success, and they are aiming at more.

So by staying here, you don’t only create for yourself a special holiday with so much to enjoy and to do all around (there’s nature, history, food and landscape in abundance in the area of Cape Rodoni where the villa is situated), but your holiday is also doing something good for the ones in need.

Villa sleeps 4. Has kitchen, and all utensils. Has private pool. It is found inside a small managed resort with a hotel and a restaurant in it. Right next to the residence is a spectacular restaurant owned by a fisherman’s family. There are amazing bicycle trails all over to visit! This is eventually one of the most peaceful residences to be found in the Eastern shores of the Adriatic! Drop us an email to find out about availability and prices for 2023 and 2024!

This tour is designed for those who have 2 days free.  From Tirana, it takes about three hours to get to Gjirokaster and it is definitely worth spending the night – there are many things to see and do!  You can let us know the days that you are coming and we can go from there. Afterwards, we can either take you back to Tirana or on to another destination (which we can discuss! We are flexible.)  Gjirokaster is beautiful and unique – it shouldn’t be missed.
If you don’t know about Ismail Kadare’s works or life yet (he is our most famous author, born here in Gjirokaster), let us recommend some of his books before you come! Start with his popular Chronicle in Stone and/or The General of the Dead Army – neither of which have been difficult for past visitors to order online in English. They have excellent translations and some have in-depth biographies which help explain his complex mind and life situation (he lived through many tragic events.)  He paints a story of 20th century Albania like no other author has, and nowhere can this history come to life better than in Gjirokaster!
Itinerary:
  • Depart Tirana early in the morning for Gjirokaster (approx. 3 hour drive.) Thanks to who knows who, we can profit from the substantial improvement of road infrastructure between the two towns! We will happily stop for a bathroom break or coffee on the way.
  • Check into a charming boutique family hotel.
  • Tour of the Old Town. Visit the beautifully located Castle and the Weapon Museum. Then head to the Bazaar.
  • Enjoy a delicious traditional meal in the romantic atmosphere of the “stone town” and its wonderfully preserved Ottoman era homes. (We can suggest some great dishes to try here!)
  • Visit the neighbourhoods and some of the more than 600 houses and buildings that give Gjirokaster the reputation of being a town of unique legends, witches, dragons and “crazy alleys.” (Enver Hoxha’s birthplace is also here, just to add to the mystique.)
  • There is an option to make a trip to the corners that Kadare mentions in his books. We will comment on his works and have some deeper discussions on some of the imagery in his writing (which will be easy to imagine walking through his birthplace!) We can be flexible – if you have studied him well, just let us know what you know and we’ll try to design a tour around your readings.
  • Overnight in Gjirokaster.
  • Next day return to Tirana or on to another destination

The typical socialist realism art is filled with details and propaganda. It doesn't mean it's uninteresting though.

One aspect of Albanian culture that interests us is Socialist Realism art – of which Albania has in abundance. The communist regime took the visual arts very, very seriously and the country is peppered with their works, from mosaics to monuments (many of which are now sadly vandalized or have simply been neglected.)

You can visit the National Gallery of Arts in Tirana to see its collection of Socialist Realism art, but without any context or in-depth descriptions, the works can sometimes be a little perplexing. This is why we try to arrange for our clients a visit to the gallery with one of Albania’s finest Socialist Realism artists, Robert Permeti. Those who have taken the tour with him before have been moved by his stories and have learned a lot about the time period.

Check out the Socialist Realism tour we offer!

The founders of Albanian Trip were all born and bred in Tirana and you can’t find a better company with whom to explore this magical city.  Tirana is a city teeming with life; a certain raw quality makes it appealing to those who love to dig deeper to find the true character of a place – there is so much to see, do and eat!  We want to help expose to you the real Tirana and this tour will combine old and new, authentic and ordinary, primitive and  modern,  known and unknown stories, public and private spaces, solid and liquid delicacies, walked and driven paths.

While we do have a full list of potential activities, we are willing to work with your particular tastes so you get the most out of the wander.  We can include stops for food and anything else you will need!

Itinerary:

We’ll approach it in the usual Tirana way: let’s start avash-avash around 9:30. We’ll walk around some central neighborhoods first (learning the historical and cultural particularities of the area), take a break for a delicious bite to eat and drink and can then dive into more local surroundings for great stories, characters, meetings and tastes if time permits.

Nowadays it’s very important for people to read good reviews of a company before booking a trip abroad! Please take a couple of minutes to rate us on Tripadvisor. We are desperate to let people know about the great activities we offer around Albania and the Balkans.  Click here to tell others about your incredible (hopefully not awful!) experience with Albanian Trip.

We had our very first lepidopterist tour of Northern Albania in the summer of 2016 and it was a lot of fun! For those who are unsure, the northern part of Albania is an enchanting land of mountains, valleys, beautiful traditions and interesting folklore! (And yes, there are lots of butterflies and moths!)
In 2016 we had a surprising adventure with a fantastic bunch of butterfly and nature connoisseurs who helped us learn and understand so much about our natural world!  With endless enthusiasm, persistence and hard work we enjoyed the company of some of the most dedicated lepidopterists ever.
If you believe this sounds like something you’d love to do, please message us! If you have a small group ready to go, this is great, otherwise we will be putting out feelers to see who is interested! We will work out the dates when we know how many people are in your group and what time you can come – of course, summer is best! We’ll be most happy to arrange longer stays if you’re interested in Albanian mountains, beach or cities, but please see the general itinerary below!
The activities on each day will mostly revolve around butterfly and moth adventures but we can also add on excursions to dive into other parts of Albanian heritage and history.  For now, we are listing just a general idea of where we will be staying each night.  The day’s activities will vary:
